Warm up time

Postby Coco-loco » 03 Jan 2014, 21:56

A limit of 2 minutes, including jump height adjustment, is usually given for warm up prior to racing. This is great where no adjustment is necessary, not bad if taking slats out, but if heights need to be adjusted from 7" to 14" this can be quite time consuming, especially if you have no spare team members and you are also trying to hold an excited dog. There has been occasions when we have only managed a recall from the box and not even done a practice run by the time the whistle is blown.

Are members from other teams allowed to come into the ring to help alter the jump heights? Or could consideration be given to starting the warm up time from the point when jump heights are correct?

You can't start the warm up time from when the jump heights are lowered unfortunately, the time usually starts when both flyball boxes from the previous race have been lifted from the lanes (or that's when head judges have told me to start the warm up time anyway as a judge) and the warm up time can vary by tournament anyway, I don't think tournament organisers are obliged to even give teams two minutes per race.

Simple things like knowing which races you're in, which lane you're in and being ready outside the ring on the race before yours can help you get the most out of your time. If you are short on handlers or helpers, it'd probably be quicker for one or two team members to hold a few dogs each, leaving the others to go in and get the box in, jumps at the right height and box lined in quickly rather than all trying to do the jump heights with an excited dog in tow.

Yes people from other teams can help you set up but they have to be a current BFA member as David mentioned. Well worth trying to find a friend from another team who is free in your division if you're struggling though as an extra pair of hands will probably make things much easier :)

Thanks, we may consider asking for some helpers in future then.

We are always ready and waiting to go in the ring, we just find it time consuming to add extra slats if the previous team has run over 7" and we are running at 13 or 14". It can give quite a significant time advantage if jump heights don't need to be changed.
