My name is Lindsey and I am a qualified veterinary physiotherapist looking
to investigate the efficacy of warm up routines in flyball dogs.
This research will go towards gaining my MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy.
Therefore, I am looking for a flyball group or a few members who would be
willing to spare some time to contribute towards this research.
Each dog would be photographed by a thermal camera which looks at heat
being radiated from the body before being exercised. This image shows the
different heat signatures over the body and will be used as a baseline for
the rest of the study. The owner would then be asked to warm their dog up
with their usual pre-competition/pre-flyball training routine and once
complete their dog would again have a thermal image taken.
At this point the dog would be allowed to rest for approximately half an
hour to allow them to return to their original pre exercise state. Once
this was achieved the owner would be asked to perform a set warm up
routine devised by myself with their dog. This routine involves a gentle
warm up incorporating walk, trot and controlled running. Again after this
a thermal image would be taken. At this point the dog and owner will have
finished their participation within the research project. The research is
completely non-invasive and owners are free to pull out of the study with
their dogs at any time without giving a reason.
Initially I would require 2-4 dogs to conduct a small pilot study to
calibrate equipment and look at timescales however, the complete study
will require 10-20 dogs. The research needs to be conducted indoors as the
local environment and weather can have a large impact on the thermal
I am based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire but would be willing to meet with
groups/members in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, South
Yorkshire or further afield if needed.
If you would like to discuss this further or would like to participate in
this study I can arrange to come along and meet with you at a time
convenient to you.
